PT Pupuk Kujang was among the recipients who were conferred with the Social Empowerment Award. PT Pupuk Kujang is a subsidiary of a state-owned enterprise (BUMN) – PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) based in Cikampek, West Java. The company was established in 1975 and is one of the largest fertilizer producers in Indonesia, producing a range of fertilizers such as Urea & NPK for various crops including rice, corn, sugarcane, and oil palm. PT Pupuk Kujang is committed to sustainability and has implemented various environmental and social responsibility programs.
“Kampung NanasKu” is a CSR program engaged in the cultivation and processing of pineapples. The beneficiaries of this program are pineapple farmers in Sarireja Village, Kec. Jalancagak, Kab. Subang, West Java, Indonesia.
The “Kampung NanasKu” program has the theme “When agriculture is more than just food”. The community generally views agriculture as just a food source production activity, but through the “Kampung NanasKu” program, PT Pupuk Kujang is trying to provide a new paradigm that agriculture can be developed beyond the food sector.
This program was implemented based on the potential analysis of the project’s implementation location, namely the largest pineapple producer in West Java with a total number of beneficiaries of up to 1,140 people. In addition, the company has identified and analyzed some core problems including that the area’s agricultural model is still rudimentary so the quality and selling price of the pineapples are low. There are also no processed products and SOPs recorded as of yet.
The objectives of implementing this program are to increase the productivity and quality of pineapples through cultivation training and assistance, to encourage the application of zero-waste agriculture in pineapple cultivation, to make the “Kampung NanasKu” program a medium for underprivileged communities to increase their income, and to expand the market network and encourage collaboration with various stakeholders.
Thanks to the new cultivation SOP, farmers have experienced an increase in agricultural quality and productivity, one reason for which is due to proper fertilization methods being used; so the need for fertilizer in this group has increased. To meet this need, the company became a distributor of its fertilizer products to these farmers. This collaboration generates shared value for both the community and the company.
This community empowerment program has had a major impact on its beneficiary groups. Harvest quality, the income of beneficiaries, and the turnover of processed products have all increased. Besides that, farmers can expand access to new markets, selling not only in traditional markets but also in supermarkets, pineapple processing factories, and online markets, and also cooperate with the government to do business. This program has also made an impact on the environment because it has utilized critical land to become productive pineapple cultivation land and utilizes 3.1 tons of waste per harvest so it doesn’t pollute the environment. Under the “Kampung Nanasku” project, companies and communities will together continue to innovate and explore their potential to solve existing problems, one of which is the processing of waste generated in the cultivation and processing of pineapple derivative products.
