The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) 2023 is pleased to honor 78 outstanding business leaders and enterprises for championing sustainable and responsible business practices. Presented by leading regional NGO Enterprise Asia, the AREA is the most reputable award recognition program recognizing organizational efforts in creating a culture of compassion, integrity, and in being socially responsible corporate citizens. The AREA serves as a badge of excellence to spur further innovation and best-practice for sharing about the organization and the world at large.
CPC Corporation, Taiwan (CPC) was among the recipients who were conferred with the Investment In People (IIP) & Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSR) Awards. The company’s Chairman, Mr. Lee Shun-chin, also returns as a recurring winner of AREA’s Responsible Business Leader award.
Founded in 1946, CPC is a state-owned enterprise. Its businesses include oil and gas exploration, procurement and importation, refining, storage and transportation, marketing, and sales. Mr. Lee Shun-chin is the company’s chairman, starting from the grassroots, he has led the company to enter a new era of Net Zero transformation.
Chairman Lee established the four core operating principles of CPC: “Safety, Stability, Innovation, and Harmony.” He prioritizes “safety” as the utmost importance in operations, and it serves as the guiding principle for CPC. He strictly enforces SOP and established a safety culture from management, equipment, and personnel operation perspectives. This ensures the triangle of public safety, security, and environmental protection.
Besides that, the basis for the company’s recognition in the IIP category lies in the fact that CPC provides economically secure learning environments for students from disadvantaged families, offering diverse choices for employment, further education, and the ability to defend and attack in their careers.
Upholding the belief in continuous energy education, CPC promotes energy education through industry-academia cooperation, sponsors local schools, engages in social welfare activities, and drives local development. CPC conducted its social welfare projects with Lin-yuan High School and Xiao-gang High School respectively in 2014 and 2021. Under these programs, students in the industry-academia classes receive scholarships from CPC during their academic studies. After graduation, they have the opportunity to participate in open, competitive exams for job vacancies at CPC and enjoy the same welfare benefits and promotion opportunities as regular employees.
This stimulates a collective spirit of diligence and upward mobility. The aim is to attract outstanding students to stay in their hometowns for education, achieving the goal of “retaining talents locally” for schools and nurturing talents for the industry. By arranging internships for students at factory sites during the summer, they can experience workplace situations and bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Moving on, to win the CSR category, CPC also showcased great pioneering amongst its industry peers. The company has been implementing a sustainable management policy since 2003, which encompasses its mission and business philosophy. This policy aligns with the mainstream ESG trends and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
CPC considers compliance with regulations as the fundamental requirement for all company units. Furthermore, it actively participates in promoting environmental conventions domestically and internationally, aiming to respond to the trend of globalized businesses and expand its operational horizons.
In the future, CPC will continue to focus on core technical capabilities and strengthen research in forward-looking technologies. Under Chairman Lee’s leadership, CPC will gradually commercialize research and development outcomes, fostering the driving force for the company’s transformation and addressing the trends of energy transition, and green energy development.
