HP Inc. was among the recipients who were conferred with the Green Leadership and Circular Economy Leadership Awards. HP is a global technology leader and creator of solutions that enable people to bring their ideas to life and connect to the things that matter most. Operating in more than 170 countries, HP delivers innovative and sustainable devices, services, and subscriptions for personal computing, printing, 3D printing, hybrid work, gaming, and more.
For its Green Leadership Award, HP’s sustainabilitystrategy has three focus areas: climate action, digital equity, and human rights. The Mission of the Climate Action initiative is to drive towards a Net Zero carbon, fully regenerative economy, while engineering and bringing to market the industry’s most sustainable portfolio of products and solutions.
HP has three global goals under its Climate Action plan. These include the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2019) throughout its value chain and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040. Secondly is the goal to reach 75% circularity for products and packaging by 2030 and, finally, to counteract the deforestation caused by non-HP paper being used in its products and print services by 2030.
In reducing carbon emissions, HP’s carbon footprint of 26,899,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2022 was 18% less than in 2019. And its global operations produced 151,500 tonnes of Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions, 61% less than its 2015 baseline. In circularity, HP achieved 40% circularity, by weight, in 2022.
As for counteracting deforestation, HP addressed 32% of its total fiber footprint for paper used in its products and print services in 2022. Since 2020, all HP branded paper and paper-based packaging for home and office printers, supplies, PCs, and displays have been derived from recycled or certified sources.
To continue deepening its impact, HP has expanded its Amplify Impact channel partner program to empower over 10,000 partners in over 40 countries to advance their sustainable impact journeys.
For its Circular Economy Leadership, HP’s Vision is to become a fully circular company powered by service models and circular design in its products. To minimize environmental impacts, the company is working toward product circularity, continued improvements in energy efficiency, and using more sustainable materials. HP extends product life through design, maintenance, upgrades, repair, and innovative service-based business models. At the end of service, it strives to reuse or recover all products.
With a goal to reach 75% circularity for products and packaging by 2025, HP has made significant strides in circularity by managing to achieve 40% circularity, by weight, in 2022.
Achievements in this area include HP using 32,200 tonnes of post-consumer recycled content plastic in its products, equivalent to 15% achieved. HP has also reduced single-use plastic in its packaging by 55% since 2018, and recycled 879,100 tonnes of hardware and supplies since 2016. Besides that, over 95% of home and office printers, PCs, and displays shipped to customers included recycled materials and over 1 billion ink cartridges have been recycled through the HP Planet Partners Program. The company continues to lead innovation in circularity throughout its product and services portfolio and looks to increase circularity in partnership with its suppliers and channel partners.
