Mass Rapid transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) signed a Civil Main Contract (CMC) for Segment 1 of the Mutiara Line light Rail Transit (LRT) project worth RM8.31 billion with SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the CMC for Segment 1 of the Mutiara Line LRT project will connect the South Reclamation Island of Penang-A (PSR-A) to Komtar with an estimated alignment length of 24km.
“SRS Consortium, led by Gamuda Bhd, has extensive experience and expertise in this project, having been involved since the early stages, including technical studies and obtaining crucial approvals.
“The procurement negotiation process between MRT Corp and SRS Consortium, which has been ongoing since April 2024, has been carried out meticulously and thoroughly,” Loke said, adding that the Mutiara Line LRT Project consists of three main tender packages – CMC Segment 1, CMC Segment 2 and the Turnkey System Contract (STC).
He explained that Segment 2 involves the connection from Macallum to Penang Sentral, approximately 6km in length, which includes the construction of a 3.2km sea bridge with a navigational span that allows ships and ferries to pass to the ports in Prai and Butterworth.
“The tender for CMC Package 2 is expected to open in July 2025 through an open tender process,” Loke stated, highlighting that the STC will cover the design, procurement, construction, testing and maintenance of the railway system for the project.
The first tender briefing for the Turnkey System Contract received positive responses from both local and international companies. Tenders were officially opened on 13 December 2024 and the tender submission will close on 14 April 2025. The second briefing will take place in Kuala Lumpur on 14 January 2025.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Gamuda stated that the project is expected to be completed in about 72 months from the notice to proceed.
“The works involve the design, construction and completion of elevated guideways, stations, a depot at PSR-A for light and heavy maintenance, ancillary structures, at-grade park and ride, utilities and services relocations, utility buildings, external surface works and other associated works.
“The Penang LRT Mutiara Line Project is expected to contribute positively to the revenue and earnings of the Gamuda group for the financial year ending 31 July 2025 and onwards until the completion of the project,” it said.
