Pertamina Patra Niaga DPPU Sepinggan was among the recipients who were conferred with the Social Empowerment Award. DPPU Sepinggan is an energy company operating in the aviation fuel service sector. The company provides aviation fuel services to airlines and the government with products such as Avtur and Avgas. Its operational area is located at Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan.

The project “Yuk Kawal IKN (Let’s All Join for a Real Collaboration)” is a waste management program that implements a circular economy system where waste is utilized down to the smallest component. By utilizing self-made machines named Hiro types X and Y, waste can be processed into various organic, inorganic materials like used cooking oil.

The waste management ecosystem from upstream to downstream invites as many parties as possible to collaborate in repurposing waste, and the parties directly involved are IKAM and WAL. The IKAM group, consisting of waste banks and communities, collects waste, provides education on how to utilize processed waste, and does the SPS treatment (All Use Waste). Meanwhile, the WAL group consists of several SME groups and the local community which encompasses unemployed fathers, housewives, fishermen, and school-age children.

The “Yuk Kawal IKN” project has several strategies for sustainability such as utilizing processed organic waste into more useful materials. In addition, some of the participating companies have the ability to process chopped plastic waste to be repurposed. DPPU Sepinggan also provides knowledge transfer as one of the company’s core competencies, including both hard and soft skills.

The sustainability compass was used to measure the project’s success. In the nature aspect, this project has processed 216 tons per year of waste and utilized 1,150m² of unused land for productive use. In the economic aspect, the valuation of the ecosystem activity chain is worth more than IDR519 million and which led to 3,191 direct beneficiaries in 2022. The company also developed 17 UMKM (small and medium-sized enterprises), 4 gardens, and 3 fish farming points within the project’s ecosystem.

For the well-being aspect, “Yuk Kawal IKN” focuses on waste processing directly from the source using circular economy methods. As for the social aspect, DPPU Sepinggan created a national-scaled outreach by collaborating with the Ministry of Industries and several educational institutions in Indonesia. So far, eleven groups have joined the “Yuk Kawal IKN” ecosystem.

In the future, “Yuk Kawal IKN” will become the foundation for an ecosystem that empowers its community in waste management based on circular economy principles. DPPU Sepinggan will develop innovations and there is potential for the development of food waste management based on family resilience, which involves implementing waste processing concepts at the family level. DPPU Sepinggan will also provide education to the community to start managing their household waste by composting and utilizing their land for growing plants.
