The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) 2023 is pleased to honor 78 outstanding business leaders and enterprises for championing sustainable and responsible business practices. PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang was among the recipients who were conferred with the Social Empowerment Award. PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang is the first urea fertilizer company in Indonesia which was founded in 1959. The Vision of PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang is to become a leading agro-industry company in Asia. The company’s working areas covers the province of South Sumatra, Central Java, East Java, and North Sumatra.
Sehat Sejahtera Pulau Kemaro, called “SESERA”, is the umbrella term for the community empowerment program that the company implemented on Kemaro Island. Under this program, there are several empowerment sub-programs, namely Floating Net Cages, Zero Waste Agriculture, Women’s Cooperatives, Floating Restaurants, etc. The “SESERA” program aims to improve people’s welfare through these programs. The goal of this empowerment program is to assist the rise of community independence in earning income through entrepreneurial activities. In addition, this program also aims to change people’s lifestyles to be cleaner and healthier.
The “SESERA” program has contributed to alleviating the unemployment problem in Kemaro Island and also increases the income of the community, especially housewives. Based on the data, the increase in people’s income reached IDR500 per month. The environment in Kemaro Island has also become more cleaner and hygienic. Public health has also improved because the locals are able to use clean water for their daily activities.
In 2023, PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang will develop the “SESERA” program through the Floating Resto and Floating Farming. Floating Resto is expected to become a destination for tourists visiting Kemaro Island.
Meanwhile, Floating Farming aims to overcome the farming issues on Kemaro Island. This program is expected to increase possible harvests to 3 to 4 times a year without having to depend on the tides of the rivers.
