The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) 2023 is pleased to honor 78 outstanding business leaders and enterprises for championing sustainable and responsible business practices. Presented by leading regional NGO Enterprise Asia, the AREA is the most reputable award recognition program recognizing organizational efforts in creating a culture of compassion, integrity, and in being socially responsible corporate citizens. The AREA serves as a badge of excellence to spur further innovation and best-practice for sharing about the organization and the world at large.
BDO Foundation was among the recipients who were conferred with the Social Empowerment Award. BDO Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank, aims to contribute to nation-building by addressing the needs of underserved sectors of society in the Philippines through its advocacies in the areas of financial inclusion, and disaster response and rebuilding.
BDO Foundation partnered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Fish Right Program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID Fish Right), and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) (Central Bank of the Philippines) for the “Financial Education Program For Fisherfolk In The Philippines”.
The program is supportive of BSP’s National Strategy for Financial Inclusion. The “Financial Education Program For Fisherfolk In The Philippines” project contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in the areas of financial inclusion, poverty reduction, and environmental protection. This undertaking also supports the Department of Agriculture’s goal to attain a food-secure and resilient Philippines with empowered and prosperous farmers and fisherfolk.
Through the program, BDO Foundation aims to improve the financial literacy, productivity, and income-generating capability of fisherfolk all over the country. Other objectives are to contribute to the government’s efforts to help fishers and their families break the cycle of poverty as well as to teach them methods of conserving and sustainably caring for the source of their livelihood.
