Volvo Malaysia Launches Updated Heavy-Duty Trucks to Enhance Safety and Driver Experience

Malaysia has been ranked as the second-best performing ASEAN country in global trade logistics, climbing to 26th place in the 2023 World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI), up from 41st in 2022. In support of Malaysia’s ambition to further strengthen its logistics ecosystem, Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Volvo Trucks) has unveiled its newly updated range of heavy-duty trucks.

The launch aims to assist businesses in improving fuel efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing safety for both drivers and road users.

“Safety, quality, and sustainability remain our core values at Volvo Trucks,” said Anna Engblom, Managing Director for Volvo Trucks Southeast Asia and Japan. “Today’s launch of our newly updated Volvo Heavy-Duty Trucks reflects our commitment to delivering solutions that elevate safety for drivers and operators while contributing to environmental care. The presence of industry partners and government agencies underscores a shared interest in innovative solutions that ensure safer roads and reduced environmental impact.”

Volvo Trucks’ newly updated heavy-duty range includes the FH, FM, and FMX models, equipped with state-of-the-art safety innovations and designed to meet the unique demands of Malaysia’s logistics sector. Key safety features include:

  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking: Now a standard feature.
  • Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS): Stabilises the vehicle in varying conditions.
  • Camera Monitoring System (CMS): Available from Q2 2025, equipped with night vision to minimise blind spots and improve safety.
  • LED Lighting: Enhances visibility for safer night-time driving.

Volvo’s legacy in safety is further reinforced by the top five-star rating received from Euro NCAP for its FH and FM models. This marks the first time Euro NCAP has assessed heavy-duty trucks, with Volvo achieving excellence in safe driving, collision avoidance, and post-crash rescue measures.

Sustainability Commitments and Efficiency Gains

Aligning with Malaysia’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021–2030, Volvo’s newly updated trucks meet Euro 5 emissions standards, offering businesses a pathway to reduce their carbon footprint. Aerodynamic upgrades, including the Globetrotter cab design, provide up to 9% improved fuel efficiency. Features like Cruise Control with I-See optimise speed and gear changes based on topography, further enhancing fuel savings.

“Transitioning to low-emission vehicle technology is a critical step in achieving Malaysia’s sustainability goals. Our trucks are purpose-built to support businesses in meeting these objectives while remaining competitive,” Engblom added.

Volvo Trucks recognises the critical role heavy-duty truck drivers play in Malaysia’s supply chain. The new range offers improved driver ergonomics, spacious resting areas, and intuitive controls to reduce fatigue and improve productivity during long-haul journeys. Features from the Safety+ package, including Driver Alert Support and Lane Change Support, further enhance the driving experience.

The cabin upgrades also include an enhanced audio system, improved information display with USB-C ports, and ergonomic seating for added comfort.

Empowering Women in Trucking

In a bid to promote inclusivity in the logistics industry, Volvo Trucks launched the Iron Women Programme in September 2024. This initiative equips women with the skills to become heavy-duty truck drivers. To date, five women have graduated from the programme, with plans to empower 100 female drivers by the end of 2025.

To complement the truck launch, Volvo Trucks will conduct training sessions to familiarise drivers with the updated features and ensure they can optimise the trucks’ capabilities on the road.

Engblom concluded, “We remain committed to supporting our customers and partners by listening to their needs and delivering innovative, reliable solutions. Together, we can advance road safety, sustainability, and industry growth.”

The launch event was graced by Yang Berhormat Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, further solidifying Volvo Trucks’ role in driving progress within Malaysia’s transport sector.
